"Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law" (Psalm 119: 18 NKJV).

The third stanza of Psalm 119 begins with the Hebrew letter "Gimel." About 30 years ago I was attending a Bible conference in Denver when I heard a veteran missionary to Pakistan (Lee Turner) exegete this verse. I have it written in the front of my Bible because to me it contains the secret to understanding the Word of God. Clara Scott must have been inspired by this passage to write her great hymn "Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth Thou hast for me."

It is good to pray this passage every time you open up your Bible to read, meditate, or study. The Bible is a book that is "spiritually discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14). We need help from above to see the wonderful truths contained in God's Word. As the Psalmist confessed so do we: "I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me" (v. 19).  Strangers and pilgrims need guidance - guidance from above. God will grant it if we approach His Word in this prayerful attitude.

Hymn: "Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth Thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for Thee, ready my God, Thy will to see; Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!" (Clara Scott).

      Victor,
I have decided to say that "song" as a
prayer every day. Where have I been that it didn't touch me before the way it did in this devotional. "..give
me clear directions" (as it says in the
      Message!)
      As written in another reading.."Psalm
119 was not given as an exercise in reading. Rather, it is in the Bible to give you exercise in 'walking' as you translate its eternal truths into the daily disciplines of life: your business decisions, your response to authority, your choice of counselors, your approach to times of testing and discouragement."
