Leaves That Heal

"On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations" (Revelation 22:2 NIV).

This is without a doubt my favorite verse in Revelation. The angel showed John the Revelator the River of Life, flowing from the throne of God through the center of the New Jerusalem. The Tree of Life spanned the river, one side of the tree on both sides of the river. The miraculous thing about this tree is not that it bore twelve different kinds of fruit, one each month, but its leaves. "The leaves are for the healing of the nations."

Christ has always been concerned about the nations. He said His Father's House was a house of prayer for all the nations. He commissioned the Twelve to preach the gospel to every nation. Every nation will be represented in heaven. And how they will need healing. I have see so much suffering in my international travels. Children suffering from vitamin deficiency in Cuba. Lepers in India. Children intentionally crippled by their parents in India so they would beg on the streets and bring something home for the whole family. Forced starvation in Zimbabwe. Victims of "kneecapping" in Northern Ireland. And who can forget the emaciated faces of the survivors of the Holocaust in Poland, where I have been six times? Yes, praise God, "the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations - No longer will there be any curse!"

Prayer: Father of Mercies, thank You for providing healing in heaven for those who have suffered on this planet! Through Christ we pray.

Victor, this scripture has always baffled me as I could not picture how one tree could be on both sides of a river. Please explain this.

God's creative power would be my reply. The text does use the word "tree" in the singular. Remember the giant Redwood tree in California that was so huge that a highway actually ran through it? Perhaps this tree spans the River of Life that runs through it.

Mr KNowles, I have been looking for the scripture that talks about the deceitfulness of the heart. I thought Ic could go right to it but wrong!! Could you help me find the verse(s) I am looking for? Thanks for any help you can give me. I love your devotions and follow them daily.

      Dear Joyce,

The verse that comes to mind right away would be Jeremiah 17:9,10, "The heart is deceitful amove all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings."
