Two Kinds of Fellowship

"That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you may also have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ" (1 John 1:3 NKJV).
I have a friend in India who recently visited the United States. It was my pleasure to introduce him to many of my Christian friends in various churches and church-related ministries. We had him in our home for meals several times during his stay. Often he would clasp his hands together and with a wonderful smile creasing his face would say, "Wonderful fellowship!"
Our fellowship is two-fold. First, there is vertical fellowship: "truly our fellowship is with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ." Then, there is horizontal fellowship: "that you also may have fellowship with us." Fellowship with each other is predicated upon our fellowship with God and Christ. When a horizontal line crosses with a vertical line, you have before you the outline of the Cross. Only because of Christ's blood shed on the cross can we have fellowship with God and with each other (see v. 7).
Song: "What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms; what a blessedness, what a peace is mine, leaning on the everlasting arms" (Elisha A. Hoffman).
