The Danger of Drifting

"Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away" (Hebrews 2:1 NKJV).

I haven't done much boating but I do know that unless the skipper or captain puts down anchor or ties the ship to the mooring, there is a danger of drifting. The Word of God is our anchor. That's why the writer says that we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard. That's why Bible study is important. That's why teaching and preaching is so vital to our spiritual well  being.

"Lest we drift." The Word is not going to drift away from us. Christ is not going to drift away from us. God is not going to drift away from us. The danger of drifting lies with us. Spiritual drift is caused by not being anchored to the Word of God. Christ is our anchor. Our hope in Christ is our anchor. "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil...even Jesus..." (6:19,20).

Song: "Will your anchor hold in the storms of life, when the clouds unfold their wings of strife? When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain, will your anchor drift or firm remain? We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love" (Priscilla J. Owens).
