Counting My Blessings

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ" (Eph. 1: 3 NIV).

I heard someone say the other day, "I'm too blessed to be stressed." And why not? Here we learn that God has blessed us (in "the heavenly realms" - see 1:20 and 2:6) with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Remember that song, "Count your many blessings, name them one by one"? Let's do that.

Paul mentions 7 spiritual blessings in the context. (1) The blessing of being one of the chosen, v. 4. (2) The blessing of being adopted as His child, v. 5. (3) The blessing of being accepted in the Beloved, v. 6 NKJV. (4) The blessing of redemption from sin through the blood of Christ, v. 7. (5) The blessing of having the mystery of His will being made known to us, v. 9. (6) The blessing of having an eternal inheritance, v. 11 NKJV. (7) The blessing of being sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, v. 13 NKJV. Yes, count your many blessings, name them one by one. Please notice two important things. One, these are spiritual blessings (no "health and wealth" promised). Two, these blessings are found only "in Christ."

Praise: "Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen." (Thomas Ken)
