Always Abounding

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord" (2 Cor. 15:58 NKJV).
To "abound" means to be plentiful, to be fully supplied, in increase greatly, to teem, to be filled to overflowing. So to "abound" is to operate out of the overflow. The Amplifed Version says, "Always being superior (excelling, doing more than enough) in the service of the Lord." "A faithful man will abound in blessings" (Prov. 28:20).
You can "abound" in the wrong arena. "Where sin abounded..." (Rom. 5:20). Sin was always abounding in Sodom. You can abound in sin, you can abound in the flesh, or you can abound in the work of the Lord. I choose the work of the Lord. With Nehemiah I can say, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down!" The "work of the Lord is the greatest work in the world. The work for "work" is ergon and means "an enterprise of God. The world has its enterprises. The church has its enterprises. The Lord's work is whatever He did on earth when He was here; it is what He would do today; it is what He has told us to do.
Praise: "Work, for the night is coming, work through the sunny noon; fill brighest hours with labor, rest comes sure and soon: Give every flying minute something to keep in store; work, for the night is coming, when man works no more" (Anna L. Coghill)
