The Peril of Paneled Houses

"Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: 'Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house [i.e., the temple - V.K.] remains a ruin?'" (Haggai 1:3,4 NIV).
We have to live somewhere but we need to take care that we keep our priorities in order. I call this "the peril of living in a paneled house." In Bible days that meant a house that was built with costly woods, perhaps with the very cedar that was used in the rebuilding of the temple (Ezra 3:7). David once lamented, "I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains" (2 Sam. 7:2). Notice that it was a lament, not a boast.
Evelyn and I have adopted a little motto to live by: "Live simply so others can simply live." That might mean downsizing or giving away some of our things. Evelyn is a wonderful interior decorator but rarely buys anything new for the house. Maybe you have never considered "the peril of living in a paneled house" but then again maybe this is the day you should give some thought to it. Do you "earn wages only to put them in a purse with holes in it"? (v. 6).
Hymn/Prayer: "Take my silver and my gold - not a mite would I withhold; take my intellect and use every power as Thou shalt choose" (Frances Ridley Havergal).
