Not by Might, Nor by Power

"This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6 NKJV).

This is my favorite verse in the book of Zechariah. For some reason, whenever I do a "sound check" I speak these words into the microphone. Perhaps it is a reminder to myself that what I am about to do (deliver God's Word) I am to do not by my might or by my own power, but by the Spirit of Almighty God!

How many things does the modern church do today by human might or collective power? How many things do we try to do each day by our own wits and strength? My friend Joe Garman asks, "What if God withdrew His Holy Spirit from us?" Would we even notice? This verse comes immediately after the vision of the lampstand and the olive trees. According to verse 12, the oil fed the pipes which led to the central reservoir. Often oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit in the Bible. This is a vivid reminder that we are to operate in the divine power of the Spirit, and not by human ingenuity.

Hymn/Prayer: "Holy Spirit, all divine, dwell within this heart of mine; cast down every idol-throne, reign supreme and reign alone" (Andrew Reed).
