"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself" (Daniel 1:8 NKJV).

When you purpose in your heart what you want to do (or do not want to do), great things can happen. Daniel and his friends were captives in Babylon but the king took a liking to them. They could have had all the fine food and best wines they wanted. But Daniel "purposed in his heart" not to be defiled. He asked for a spartan diet of veggies and water. At the end of 10 days he and his friends looked so good that their peers, who had been gorging themselves on the king's delicacies, were also put on a veggie and water diet! (I don't imagine they liked Daniel very much for that!)

The power of purposing in your heart is real indeed. It was purpose of heart that led Abraham to the Promised Land, that caused Jesus to set His face steadfastly towards Jerusalem and climb the hill of Calvary, that compelled Paul to preach the Gospel to unreached regions. Purpose in your heart today that you will not be defiled by what the world dangles in front of you. Purpose in your heart to practice a spartan "diet" of spiritual intake. In fact, why not try it for 10 days like Daniel did and see what happens?

Song: Standing by a purpose true, heeding God's command, Honor them, the faithful few! All hail to Daniel's band! Dare to be a Daniel, dare to stand alone! Dare to have a purpose firm! Dare to make it known! (Philip P. Bliss)
