The Power of Praise

"Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people...who had come against Judah; and they were defeated" (2 Chronicles 20:22 NKJV).

The story of how Jehoshaphat defeated a coalition of enemies who were aligned against Judah is an amazing one. He confessed his powerlessness and utter dependency upon God (v. 12). He positioned himself and his army to fight, beginning with worship (v. 17,18). The battle dawned with Jehoshaphat instructing the people to sing to the Lord (v. 21). And when they began to sing God confounded their enemies and they destroyed each other. Judah returned to Jerusalem in triumph.

Do you feel like you are surrounded by negative forces today? Maybe they are actual enemies or perhaps it is just circumstances. Never mind. The secret to overcoming what surrounds you is found in worship, singing, and praise. The Bible says that when Judah began to sing and to praise, God began His marvelous work of intervention. "Sing When Your Trials Are Greatest" is the title of an old hymn. That's what Paul and Silas did at the midnight hour and that's when God intervened on their behalf (Acts 16:25,26). Behold the awesome power of praise!

Song/Confession: I need Jesus, my need I now confess; no friend like Him in times of deep distress; I need Jesus, the need I gladly own; though some may bear their load alone, yet I need Jesus. (George O. Webster). [And may I be permitted to slightly alter the refrain? - Victor Knowles]. Praise Him in the sunshine hour, praise Him when the storm clouds low'r; every day along my way, yes, I praise Jesus!

      Vic,

You took my mind back with the song "I Need Jesus." I can picture Wednesday night Bible studies at Ernie Collins or the Grables. Ah, to be able to go back for one evening and sit around, see the faces and listen to the voices of all those departed saints singing once again.

I can remember those days too. While we can only go back in memory and relive those times and see those faces we live in "the blessed hope" that some day we will see them again, see their familiar faces, and hear their voices once again.
