"And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage" (Ezra 9:8 KJV).

I chose the KJV for this favorite verse of mine in Ezra because it uses the arresting phrase "a nail in his holy place." The NKJV uses "peg" and the NIV reads "a firm place in his sanctuary." Ezra was overcome by the grace of God. Even in their captivity He cared for the remnant of the faithful, reviving their souls in the midst of their bondage.

This is also one of the few times "grace" is mentioned in the Old Testament. It is by the amazing grace of God that we are permitted a nail in His holy place. I hang my hope of heaven on that nail and so do you. Just as we hang our hat or coat or scarf on a peg when we come into a house, so we hang everything we have within our soul on that firm place in His sanctuary. May we, the remnant people of God today, praise Him for the light we still receive, for "the measure of revival in our bondage" (NKJV), and for the blessing of have a nail in His holy place to hang our hope of eternity upon!

Prayer: Gracious Father, how good You always are to Your people. We ask for a reviving in our spiritual bondage on this polluted planet. Thank You for giving us a nail in Your holy place! Through Christ we pray.
