"Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the LORD?" (1 Chronicles 29:5 NKJV).

I believe this is my favorite verse in 1 Chronicles. King David set his affections on the house of God and gave to its construction "over and above" out of his own special treasury (v.3). He expected the people to do the same and even issued this challenge which rings in our ears today: "Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?"

Consecration is the need of the hour. Nothing that counts with God is accomplished without a consecrated people. To "consecrate" is to declare sacred or make holy. If we are consecrating ourselves to God, we must devote ourselves to a life of holiness and consider our lives and ministry as something sacred. To live otherwise is to practice desecration, not consecration. Years ago people whose faith and love had waned would "re-consecrate" their lives by coming forward at the invitaiton hymn. Maybe it is time for some of us to do that today.David's invitation, after all, is really God's invitation.

Song/Prayer: Consecrate me now to Thy service Lord, by the power of grace divine; Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in Thine. (Fanny J. Crosby)
