"Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God" (2 Samuel 9:3 NKJV).

This is truly an amazing passage. Saul had tried to kill David and had tracked him down like an animal. Yet David is not seeking to eradicate the house of Saul (as was the practice of other kings); rather, he is seeking to be a blessing to any descendants of Saul. Verse 1 tells us that David wanted to show kindness to any left in the house of Saul "for Jonathan's sake." But it was also "the kindness of God" that he wished to manifest. His wish was granted in the person of Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Saul. David cared for him and his family the rest of his life.

"Random acts of kindness" are a nice thing, but it is a better thing when we intentionally seek out someone to "show the kindness of God." Perhaps it may even be someone who was once aligned against us. Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Is the Spirit prompting you today to show the kindness of God to some particular person? Perhaps you have not thought of them for years. Maybe they are the relative of some dear friend in the past. Why not do something unexpected and out of the ordinary for them that they might know that they are remembered - that they might experience "the kindness of God"?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, move in our hearts today to show someone Your kindness. Thank You for being so kind to us, we who are so undeserving, so unloving, so unkind in some of our thoughts, words and deeds. Help us to be a kinder, gentler people. Through Christ we pray.
