The Most Beautiful Pledge

"But Ruth said: 'Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you: For wherever you go, I will go: And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried'" (Ruth 1:16-17a, NKJV).

This is my favorite verse in the Book of Ruth because these words were sung at our wedding nearly 40 years ago (August 7, 1967). It is a pledge that Evelyn and I made to each other, and that we have kept, and God willing, will keep until one of us is the first to die. These words were originally spoken by Ruth, a Moabitess, to her mother-in-law, and Israelite. J. Vernon McGee calls this book, Ruth, Romance, and Redemption.

I believe the pledge of Ruth is the most beautiful pledge found in the Bible. Because the words of this pledge were sung at our wedding, I would like to apply them today to all married couples. Do you remember the day you pledged your allegiance to your mate, "until death do us part"? I know that you meant it then and I trust that you still are true to that pledge. Marriage is forever. And that's a good thing - because it is a God thing. Notice, "Your God, my God" (v. 16). May God bless your pledge to go together, lodge together, and serve God together until only death parts you!

Prayer: Holy Father, we pledge to You our undying devotion. May we never leave You or turn back from following You. And help us who have pledged devotion to each other to grow in love and keep our vows until the day we die. Through Christ we pray.
