Why Is It "Good" Friday?

"So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, 'Truly this Man was the Son of God!'" (Mark 15:39 NKJV).
Today is called "Good Friday." But why is the day Jesus died on the cross called "good"? In Germany it is called "Mourning Friday." The Slavs call it "Great Friday." Swedes and Norwegians call it "Long Friday." Why "Good Friday"?
Perhaps "Good Friday" is a corruption of "God's Friday" (like "God be with you" became simply "Good-bye"). Or maybe it is because the death of God's Son resulted in our greatest good - salvation from sin, deliverance from death, rescue from hell. The death of Christ had a profound effect on the Centurion who cried, "Truly this Man was the Son of God!" What effect does Good Friday have on you. Is it merely a long day of mourning or is it a great day of recognition? This Man died for my sins!
Prayer: Loving Father, on this Friday men call "Good" we thank You for sending us Your Son to take our place on the Cross. Thank You for making us righteous before You by His blood. Through the crucified and risen Christ we pray.
