On the Altar

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul" (Leviticus 17:11 NKJV).
This is my favorite verse in Leviticus. The word "atonement" appears some 45 times in the book. Leviticus teaches us that the way to God is by blood sacrifice. Atonement means covering. The blood Jesus Christ shed for us on the cross covers, or atones for, our sins (Romans 3:25).
The altar of atonement in the Old Testament is the cross of Christ in the New Testament. Where would you and I be today were it not for the shed blood of Jesus on the altar/cross? Each Lord's Day we have a wonderful opportunity to remember that the blood on the altar foreshadowed the Savior's blood on the cross when we break the bread and drink the cup. Our sins are all covered, our guilt is all gone. Thank God for the blood that was shed for our atonement!
Song of Praise: What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Oh! precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow; no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus (Robert Lowry).
