How to "Get Even" With Your Enemy

"If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the LORD will reward you" (Proverbs 25:21,22 NKJV).
We don't want to have enemies but because of sin we are bound to have some during our life. That being the case, how should we treat them? The world would say, "Give it to them! Give them what they deserve!" But God says something else. He says, "Give him bread. Give him water." In other words, give him what he doesn't deserve.
It is not easy to do this. We want people to get their "just desserts." Sometimes we would like to be the one dishing out the desserts! But God reminds us there is a better way. By giving them what they don't deserve, we are being like God. It is a good thing God didn't give us what we deserved! John MacArthur notes, "As metals are melted by placing fiery coals on them, so is the heart of an enemy softened by such kindness."
Prayer: Kind and gracious Father, we want to be more like You and less like the world. Instill within us, we pray, the right spirit toward our enemies. Through Christ we pray.
