Have a Heart!

"Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart" (Proverbs 25:20 NIV).

Who would take someone's garment away on a cold winter day? The same kind of person who would pour vinegar on soda (causing foment and agitation). The same kind of person who would sing songs of cheer (while not meaning a word of what they are singing) to someone who has a heavy heart.

Have you ever gone to church with a burden and felt like nothing that was said or done really helped you? We must be very careful to have a genuine compassion for people and their needs, lest we become identified with those who take away a garment on a cold day or pour vinegar on soda! If we are going to try and cheer someone up, let us do so with authentic sympathy.

Prayer: God of all comfort, fill us with Your love and compassion so that we may be a genuine blessing to those who need a word of cheer or act of kindness. Through Christ we pray.
