"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" (Proverbs 25:11 NKJV).
What a beautiful word picture is painted for us in this pertinent proverb! A word fitly spoken. The NASB reads, "a word spoken in right circumstances." How do you know what you should say? Or when you should speak it? Or even what word to use? No wonder James said, "Let every one be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger" (James 1:19 NAS
.
Before you can speak the right word you must choose the right word. This is especially true when you are writing an essay or even writing a letter or sending an email. The dictionary and thesaurus contain thousands of words. I often consult these sources before selecting the right word. Sometimes it is even good to stop and pray about selecting the right word to speak or write. Someone has said, "Make your words sweet for you may have to eat them." A song I learned in Sunday School more than 50 years ago is still true. "O be careful little tongue what you say. For the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little tongue what you say."
Prayer: Precious Lord, what a gift You have given to us in words. May we this day use them wisely to Your glory and for the good of all mankind. Through Christ we pray.
