What We Were Vs. What We Are

"And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV).

God does not want us to dwell on what we were but rather what we are in Christ. Here Paul reminds the believers in Corinth (one of the most corrupt cities in the New Testament era) that they had been sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, homosexuals, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers. But then he reminds them that through the Godhead (this is one of the few verses where all three are mentioned in the same verse) they had been washed, sanctified, and justified.

While the devil would like to remind us of what we were, God likes to remind us of what we are in Christ His Son. For example, "For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power" (Colossians 2:9,10 NKJV). Here's another: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV). And another: "You are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God" (Ephesians 2:19 NKJV). Start making a list today of all that you are in Christ and stop dwelling on what you once were! You are what God's Word says you are in Christ.

Prayer: Gracious God, we offer our thanks to You for cleansing us from a life of sin and for placing us in Christ where we can offer you a life of service, directed by Your Holy Spirit. Through Christ we pray.
