"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2 NAS).

When I was a teen-ager, I learned many songs in summer Christian service camps that are still with me to this day. One of those songs went like this. Only to be what He wants me to be, every moment of every day; yielded completely to Jesus alone, every step of this pilgrim way: just to be clay in the Potter's hands, ready to do what His Word commands; only to be what He wants me to be, every moment of every day (Norman J. Clayton).

That chorus was written in 1938 and I am sure that it has blessed the lives of tens of thousands of believers who have sung it and put it to heart. How do we know what the Potter wants us to be? "Ready to do what His Word commands!" Why not start a Bible study project today and list all the passages where God lovingly tells you what He wants you to be? Our text today is a starter: "Be transformed." May God bless you now as you strive to live out the theme of this grand song: "Only to be what He wants me to be."

Praise: Living for Jesus, surrendered and true, every moment of every day; walking with only His pleasure in view, every step of this pilgrim way (Norman J. Clayton).

In 1970, I was a brand new believer, in the military in VietNam. We had a Bible Conference in Bankok, Thailand. At the end of one of the break out sessions, in order to bring the men back to the meeting hall, they began to sing that chorus, "Only to be what He wants me to be." Those words were so impactful to be as a young believer, it was what I wanted my life to be all about. To this day, that chorus has very special significance in my life as I seek to servie Him in ministry.
      Thanks for the reminder.

This song is undoubtedly one of those precious jewels!!

It is a call to submission.... a call that is easier sung that obeyed!!! May we receive grace to be ONLY what the master wants us to be.... even when this seems foolish to our finite understanding and spiritual short sight....amen!!!

      Wise words, Brother Solomon!

I just now discovered this site when I googled "song: Only to be what He wants me to be". In the mid 1950's into the 60's, my father had me and my siblings enrolled in the Bible Memory Association, headed by Dr. N. A. Woychuk. Each winter, for 12 weeks, we would memorize weekly assignments of 16 to 20 Scripture verses from the KJV, and recite them to a "hearer", who would report the results to the association. Each weekly assignment that was recited without one error entitled the contestant to a prize, selected from an extensive list. Completing all 12 assignments perfectly, entitled the contestant to a free week at summer camp. The closest camp to our location was in upstate New York, near Waterdown. Even travelling to camp was an adventure. My father would drive us about 2 hours to Kingston, Ontario where we would take the ferry to Wolf Island, drive across the island and take another ferry across to the New York side, then drive down to Waterdown. At camp, anyone who could recite all 12 assignments perfectly at one sitting would receive a special prize. Camp, itself, was a great experience, with oudoor activities of all kinds, making new friends from all over the North-eastern U. S. and Ontario, Canada. Each day was closely structured with a meeting in the auditorium in the morning, and a rally after supper. We did a lot of singing from a songbook entitled "Making Melody", which had been compiled by Dr. Woychuk. I still have a copy of "Making Melody". One of the songs in it, which we sang frequently enough that I still remember it entirely, was "Only to be what He wants me to be". This song, and many others in "Making Melody" have been a mainstay of my spiritual life for more than 50 years. After having not sung or heard it for many years, I awoke with it running through my mind one morning about a week ago. I went to the piano and played it through by ear a few times, then found the long-lost songbook and looked it up. It was just as I had remembered it. Perhaps the significance of this experience is not yet fully formed in me. God has a unique way of working with each individual.

What a great story, John! What a great father you had. What a great Father we all have!
