Do You Love Me?

"When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?' 'Yes, Lord,' he said, 'you know that I love you'" (John 21:15 NIV).

One of the silliest songs I heard growing up in the 1960s was, "Do You Love Me? (Now That I Can Dance)." The foolish fellow thought that his ability to do the "Mashed Potato" and "The Twist" proved his love for his girlfriend, to whom he shouted this shallow song!

But the question of Jesus, asked of Peter 2,000 years ago, still rings in our ears today. Not just "Do you love me?" but "Do you truly love me?" Not just "Do you love me?" but "Do you love me more than these?" Do we love Jesus more than we love others? Our possessions? Ourselves? One thing is for sure: if we truly love Jesus "more than these" then we will feed His lambs, take care of His sheep, and feed His sheep for those are the things that Jesus requested Peter to do. Service to others is the proof of our love for Jesus. Self-service or denial of service to others disproves our profession of love for Christ.

Song/Prayer: More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee! Hear Thou the prayer I make, on bended knee/This is my earnest plea: more love, O Christ, to Thee. More love to Thee, more love to Thee! (Elizabeth Prentiss)
