Would You Preach To Just Two People?

"Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus...They asked each other, 'Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?'" (Luke 24:13, 32 NIV).

Would you pour yourself into a sermon or class for just two people? When I was in Bible college, I preached for a little church in Promise City, Iowa. I drove about 65 miles one way twice a week for Sunday and Wednesday services. One Wednesday night there was just two people and myself. We barely qualified for "where two or three are gathered in My name!" After the class, I drove back to my college dorm feeling, wrongly, kind of low about the attendance and my performance.

I like this about Jesus. Yes, He spoke to thousands of people on several occasions but in this story He begins with Moses and the Prophets and explained to His two traveling companions how those Scriptures applied to Himself, the Messiah. You and I might have thought, "Only two people? Why waste this sermon/class on just two people? I'll save this one for when I've got a bigger audience!" But not so with Jesus. He gave the best that He had to just two travelers. Do you have to have a big crowd to get you going? Take a lesson in humility from the Greatest Teacher Who Ever Lived!

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven, how proud You must be of Your Son Jesus Who left us such a good example. May we take every opportunity to do our best even if there are only two or three present to hear us expound Your Word! Through Christ we pray.
