The Dying Virtue of Temperance

"And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown" (1 Cor. 9:25 NKJV).
Atheletes in training know that they must be temperate in all things. They can not afford to live like those who are not in training. They must very careful in what they eat and how much sleep they get. All this for the prize (in ancient times an olive wreath; today, a medal).
The prize we are striving for imperishable - eternal life. This calls for us to be temperate in all things. But how temperate are we? Do we practice moderation or indulgence? Think about it. Do we deny ourselves or pamper ourselves? I am afraid I know the answer to these questions in my own life. Do we need a spiritual "temperance movement" in the church today? If an athlete is temperate in ALL things, should not a Christian practice moderation in ALL things? I think we've got some work to do in this area. Or is it OK for us to just live as we are and never even contemplate moderation? What say you?
