When New is Better than Old

"But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter" (Romans 7:6 NKJV).

Not everything that is new is better than the old but here is one example where the new is far superior to the old. The newness of the Holy Spirit is far better than the oldness of the letter (the Mosaic law).

Now the "governor" in our life is the promised Holy Spirit and not trying to follow the letter of the law (which no one did, can, or could ever keep anyway). Perhaps the key word in today's passage is "serve." Once we receive the Holy Spirit when we become a Christian, we are empowered to serve God in a way we never could serve when we were laboring to keep the letter of the law. May our service we render to God (and to others in Jesus' name) always be in the newness of the Spirit!

Prayer: Dear Lord, how we thank You for giving us Your Spirit to govern our life and service to You in the name of Your Son Jesus.
