The Power of Silence

"So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great" (Job 2:13 NKJV).
Sometimes the power of silence is greater than anything else. But there could be no silence until there was first presence, so we commend Job's three friends for going to see him in his great distress. Note that they sat on the ground with him for an entire week. Would you be willing to do that? And they said nary a word. We think we have to say something, but this verse shows us the tremendous power of silence.
Several years ago I was going through a tremendous time of grief. The late Don DeWelt, founder of College Press Publishing Company, came to my office early one morning, took his seat on the leather couch next to my desk, and sat the entire day, not saying a word. But his presence spoke volumes to me. I shall never forget the comfort he brought to me - without ever saying a word. Never underestimate the power of just "being there."
Prayer: Father, we will not remain silent before You right now. We simply ask that You would fill us with such compassion that when we do go to some grieving person in Your name that we might practice the power of silence. Through Christ we pray.
