Swords and Trowels

"Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon" (Nehemiah 4:17 NKJV).
Because of heavy opposition, those who were rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem devised a plan to build and guard at the same time. In one hand they held a trowel and in the other a sword (or had a sword girded at his side as he built, v. 18).
Anyone who is accomplishing anything of worth for God is going to be opposed. Because we will always have enemies, we too will find it necessary to be innovative as we do what God has called us to do. We will build with the trowel and we will defend with the sword. The Christian life calls for us to go on the offense and at the same time be on the defense. Work for God and be wary of the adversary. Be willing to use both the sword and the trowel.
