"And some in the multitude cried one thing and some another. So when he could not ascertain the truth because of the tumult, he commanded him to be taken into the barracks" (Acts 21:34 NKJV).

The commander of the garrison in Jerusalem was in a quandry. Paul's presence in the temple had caused an uproar. He was dragged from the temple and beaten by a mob. When the commander appeared on the scene and asked what was going on, some in the mob cried one thing while others cried another thing. The commander "could not ascertain the truth because of the tumult."

It is difficult to ascertain truth in the midst of a tumult. That is true even today. One person or party shouts their view while another person or party bellows their belief. Truth cannot be found in a tumult. Truth is only found between the extremes. We know what truth is. Jesus declared, "Your word is truth." He also stated, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free." Truth exists, it can be known, and it is liberating. Truth will never be found where extremists scream at one another.  Truth will always be found in quiet reading of God's Word for "it is impossible for God to lie." Thank God for quiet times with His Word today!

Song: Be still my soul! The Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain/Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He faithful will remain/Be still, my soul! Thy best, thy heavenly Friend, through thorny ways leads to a joyful end (Katharina von Schlegel).
