Two Powerful Reminders

"Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles" (2 Chronicles 32:8 NKJV).

Sennacherib of Syria was one of the most powerful monarchs who lived in Bible times. When he and his army marched on Jerusalem, Hezekiah gathered his leaders together and gave them these words in our verse for today.

Do you ever feel "surrounded" or "beseiged" by forces beyond your control? Does it seem you are outnumbered by whatever or whoever is assailing you? Then take heart! Here are two powerful reminders from Hezekiah. (1) "There are more with us than with him." I believe this could be a reference to those who minister to us today - angels. (2) "With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." Sennacherib's army is no match for God, nor are all the armies of the world today. God is here to help us and fight our battles. Still, we tend to put our trust in "an arm of flesh" because it is so visible. Not so. As our song will remind us today, "the arm of flesh will fail you."

Song: Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone/The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own/Put on the gospel armou, and watching unto prayer/Where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there. (George Duffield)
