Manasseh and Amazing Grace

"Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God" (2 Chronicles 33:13 NKJV).

This is one of the most amazing verses in the Old Testament. Manasseh was perhaps the worst king to ever sit on the throne of Judah. He instituted Baal worship, even causing his own sons to "pass through the fire" (v. 6). He also practiced witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He "seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the LORD had destroyed..." (v. 10). But when he was carted off to Babylon, he turned to God, humbled himself, and prayed. And God heard his prayer and brought him back to Jerusalem (v. 13). From that day until the day he died, he sought to serve the God who "received his entreaty, and all his sin and trespass" (v. 19).

If Manasseh could find grace in the eyes of the Lord, who is beyond His amazing grace and love? Paul considered himself "the chief of sinners" (1 Tim. 1:15), but he was also a recepient of God's amazing grace. If God could forgive a man like Manasseh, who had made a mess of everything, isn't there hope for you - or for some of your friends who feel like they have sinned too much to be saved? I once preached in a men's penitentary from Romans 5:20, "But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more." What I told them I now tell you: His grace is greater than your disgrace!
